Summary

The B&O car yard and Eastbound Hump. See the Tower on the right.

Train cars heading to the east coast were consolidated on the west end of the Brunswick yard. This photo was taken in New Addition from the area between McDonald and Canal Avenues. The structures to the right of the tower and a lot of the cars in the foreground are the car repair shop. Trains from various places in the west would come into the yard at Weverton and be taken over the hump to sort into trains meant for destinations in the east. Trains heading west came in near Little Catoctin Creek in the east.

Reuben Moss: This photo was taken from the area between McDonald and Canal Avenues. The structures to the right of the tower and a lot of the cars in the foreground are the car repair shop. Trains from various places in the west would come into the yard at Weverton and be taken over the hump to sort into trains meant for destinations in the east. Trains heading west came in near Little Catoctin Creek in the east.

Judith Bowers Ware: Use to watch my Dad ride the cars down, it was pretty scary.

Phil Lowery: As a kid on Walnut Street in the summer nights the trains would be switching tracks and we would hear the engines and freight cars sounds as they lined up to prepare to head out of town. The train sounds were loud but there was no air conditioners back then and all our windows were open with sliding screens holding the windows up.
