This "Throw Back" shows the 2008 Varsity Cheer leading squad. One of the things I remember from my teaching days was overhearing from time to time students arguing (sometimes rather intensely) about whether or not cheer leading was a "sport."
My take on it was that participating in cheer leading requires a person to be athletic, and since squads from various schools would be in competitions where they had to demonstrate their athletic skills, their coordinated precision, their physical stamina, and their creativity - it didn't really matter if it was a sport or not.
To me a real disappointment about BHS and the other county high school was the lack of males on any cheerleading squads. In college males are a vital part of squads because their upper body strength allow for a greater number of routines involving pyramids, throws, and catches.
Unfortunately at the high school level a male squad member would face a lot of ripping and snickering about their sexuality from both their male and female peers, and that would require a male to be very confident about their personality. Not an easy thing to be in the high school setting.
P.S. - having been out of the FCPS for awhile, I'm not sure if any county squads now have males participating.
