This photograph captures the construction of Mount Gath Lodge, a guest house Townsend built for the estate and one of the few structures that still stand today. The photographer is standing in the road that became the Gapland Turnpike, one of the shortest turnpike routes in the United States. It stretched for about a mile from the top of the mountain down to the village of Claggett’s Station (now Gapland) to connect to the depot on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad’s Washington County Branch.<br />
