This is my favorite Wayne Carter story. In the 1980s the only place to find alternative bands in Frederick was a little bar on Market Street called the Carroll Creek Dam.
On Friday nights it was a favorite of certain members of the BHS staff to have a happy hour. The crowd was an interesting mixture of blue collar and white collar workers, all gathered in a small place for the purpose of having fun, listening to great music, and drinking beer or wine.
I once made a bet with fellow teacher Laura Fantom
that she would NEVER be able to get Wayne Carter to attend one of our happy hours.
The bet was if she did I would come over and clean her entire house from top to bottom.
If Laura could not she would have to cook me dinner for an entire week. Being a bachelor I ate TV dinners all the time.
I liked and admired Wayne, but those of you who know him can probably understand why I thought he would never attend a crowded bar where people were downing pitchers of beer while listening to loud bands playing songs such as "Free Bird" or "Stairway to Heaven."
Needless to say, I underestimated Laura's charming persuasiveness and misjudged Wayne because when I arrived for happy hour.
When I arrive that Friday night, there at a table of regular BHS-ers sat Wayne (minus his tie) drinking a beer.
The next day I cleaned Laura's house, and being the great sport that she was, she fed me a home-cooked meal at the end of my cleaning
