SMOKETOWN ROTARY CLUB TO HOLD CHARTER NIGHT

91 years (almost to the day) after the chartering of the original Brunswick Rotary Club on May 12, 1927, the Smoketown Rotary Club of Brunswick will host its Charter Night on Thursday, May 10, 2018.

The Smoketown Rotary Club of Brunswick, a Satellite Rotary Club of the Rotary Club of Carroll Creek, is conducting its Charter Dinner at 6:00 PM on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at the Steadman-Keenan American Legion at 18 South Maple Avenue in downtown Brunswick.

In 1927 Calvin Coolidge was US President; Charles Lindbergh flew non-stop across the Atlantic in the “Spirit Of St. Louis”; the Holland Tunnel under the Hudson River opened; Ford Motor Company revealed its Model A; and the Rotary Club of Brunswick launched nearly seven decades of service to the community.

The original Brunswick Rotary Club met from 1927 to 1980 in the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad YMCA, adjacent to the sprawling railyard of this central Maryland community, renowned for its railroad heritage. The Brunswick Rotary Club dissolved in 1993. The economic culture of Brunswick in 1927 is reflected in the business classifications of the fourteen original charter members: department stores, retail hardware, confectionery, lumber retail, YMCA.

The Smoketown Rotary Club will induct twenty-four Charter members in ceremonies officiated by Rotary International District 7620 District Governor Greg Wims, District Governor-Elect Rich Glover, District Club Extension Chair Ray Streib, and Rotary Club of Carroll Creek President Linda Roth.

Charter members of the Smoketown Rotary Club of Brunswick are: David S. Blackmon, Ginger A. Cayo, Gonzalo Cayo, Judith A. Couillard, Linda P. Fernandez, David Harrigan, Charles E. Harris, Lois A. Jarman, Eric J. Johnson, Sue Kelley, Kevin C. Kenny, Tara Lebherz, Robert B. MacKay, Christopher G. Mourlas, Kelly S. Putz, Abbie L. Ricketts, Vaughn F. Ripley, James E. Rippeon, William G. Shawley, Carmella A. Smith-Swafford, Ernie Stepoulos, Richard E. Stonebraker, Karin B. Tome, and Sarah A. VanDusen.
