Potomac Street. Maybe 1920s or earlier? According to the 1990 history book "Brunswick: 100 Years of Memories", Fry operated a store there that carried railroad bolt material as well as groceries. Foster who may also have been from Smoketown. Mr. Kline kept this horse, "Molasses Betts", in a shed on his property at 801 East D Street in Brunswick. Byron greets Brunswick City Council member Nellie G. Roby. The photo might have been taken at a campaign event. It's believed to have been taken at the First Baptist Church's Vacation Bible School. The ball bat may be a giveaway, as Roby Morsberger remembers playing on a sandlot baseball team they called "Legion All Stars". I Street.png (Like many other cities and towns in the United States, Brunswick had a segregated school for black elementary school students before the Supreme Court ordered the integration of public schools in 1954. In the late 19th century, classes were reportedly held in a corn crib on the Wenner farm. Later, this house at 37 West I St. was rented to accommodate 41 students. The old schoolhouse was razed in 1980 to make way for a branch of the Bank of Brunswick, which opened in 1982. A flat roof was built over the school and decorative brick parapets added to the tops of the brick walls. After the school closed in 1968, the building was purchased by the Burkittsville Ruritan Club where meetings continue today. Annual Ruritan carnivals are held on the grounds.
