September 2016 - Smoketown Rotary Club of Brunswick Rotarian Charles E. Harris, a resident of Brunswick, was
named a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International in ceremonies conducted at the Rotary
Club’s bi-weekly meeting at the Steadman-Keenan American Legion Post this week.
“By his extraordinary voluntary service in his community, church and Rotary Club, Charlie
embodies the elements of character represented by Rotary International, and through his genuine
deeds and selfless actions, has served as a beacon of leadership and service”, states Brunswick
resident Richard Foot, a member of the Rotary Club of Carroll Creek (Frederick, Maryland),
who nominated Harris for this honor.
The Paul Harris Fellow Award is presented to an individual in whose name one thousand dollars
($1,000.00) has been donated to the Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Foundation is a not-for-
profit corporation that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world
understanding and peace through international humanitarianism, educational, and cultural
exchange programs. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends
of the Foundation, who share its vision of a better world. The Foundation was created in 1917
by Rotary International’s sixth president, Arch C. Klumph, as an endowment fund for Rotary “to
do good in the world”. It has grown from an initial contribution of US $26.50 only to more than
US $55 million. It is one of the largest and most prestigious international fellowship programs in
the world.
The Paul Harris Fellow Award is named for the founder of Rotary International, a volunteer
organization of business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian service, and help
build good will and peace in the world. There are approximately 1.2 million Rotary Club
members belonging to 34,000 Rotary Clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.
Founded in Chicago in 1905, Rotary celebrated 100 years of service in 2005. The Rotary
Foundation has awarded more than US $2.1 billion in grants, which are administered at the local
level by Rotary Clubs.
