Brunswick: 100 Years of History (1990) Shafer, Edward C. (1863-1924) Honored 1976 Edward C. Shafer graduated from Gettysburg College in 1888 with a Master of Arts degree. In 1891, with his partner, Mr. Unger, he established The Brunswick Herald. He became the sole owner in 1894 and continued publication until 1913. The newspaper office was first located south of the railroad tracks but moved in 1907 to a new building at the foot of South Delaware Avenue, a building since razed. Mr. Shafer served as mayor of Brunswick 1896-1897, 1920-22, and 1922-23.

DWARD C. SHAFER, formerly editor and proprietor of the Brunswick Herald, twice mayor and one of the leading citizens of Brunswick, died Thursday evening after a long illness, 61 years old. He was a son of the late Martin T. Shafer, and resigned last summer as mayor because of failing health.

He was born near Burkittsville and after a public school education entered Gettysburg College from which he was graduated in 1886 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Two years later he received the degree of Master of Arts. In 1891 he formed a partnership with E.C. Unger and they founded the Brunswick Herald. The partnership continued until 1894 when Mr. Shafer purchased the interest of Mr. Unger and became sole proprietor.

After conducted the paper for a number of years he gave up newspaper work and engaged in the real estate and fire insurance business. For four years he was town clerk and in 1895 was one of the Democratic nominees for the House of Delegates. He took an active interest in civic affairs and was chief marshal of the first fire company organized in Brunswick. He was also president of the Volunteer Fire Company and was one of the advocates which led to the purchase of the new automobile engine. He was a member of Loyalty Lodge, Knights of Pythias, a member of the Reformed church and was chairman of the building committee under whose supervision the Reformed church was erected.

He is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Eva E.S. Nicodemus, daughter of Peter Nicodemus.

The funeral took place at the Reformed Church; interment in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, this city; C.H. Feete and Son were the funeral directors.
