Smith, Leonard (1734-1794) Honored 1981 Leonard Smith, one of the earlier settlers in Frederick County, became a surveyor and platted the town of Jefferson in 1774. After purchasing “Merry Peep-O-Day” in 1780, he laid out a town which he called “Berlin” (now Brunswick) in 1787. He hosted General George Washington for breakfast at his farm near Berlin.
