John Wesley Howard, Jr.
When designated as a Brunswick Distinguished Citizen in 1984, John Wesley Howard, Jr. , at age 71, was the oldest active member of the Brunswick Volunteer Fire Company. At the time he was the company's only african american member.
Born in 1913, he was 31 when he joined the volunteer fire company. He often assisted the fire company but was not a member when he said the Chief Sonny Cannon, "I run all of these fire calls, Why can't I be a member?" Sonny told him he could and requested he fill out the membership paperwork. Later in life, when pulling hoses became a chore, he was made a member of the Fire Police.
Howard spent 4 years in the U.S Army, serving in World War II. He worked for the B&O Railroad and also worked many side jobs in the construction trade, PEPCO, and at the local car dealerships. Downtime would find him fishing on the Potomac.
John Wesley Howard, Jr. died at the age of 84 on April 2, 1998. He is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Frederick.
