Mr. Bill Atkinson of the Maryland Department of Planning, Vice President of the Canal Towns Partnership spoke to members of the Brunswick business community on the importance of the canal to the economic well being for canal towns. He stressed the importance of bike racks close to businesses and outdoor seating. Canal users love unique and whimsical storefronts and streets. Over 28% of towpath users spend the night along the trail. He said the end result is that lively, engaged, successful communities are reaping the benefits of a growing recreation market
