Summary

This scene dates to October 1862 looking toward Berlin. The Library of Congress caption reads as follows about this Alexander Gardner image: "Photographed from the main eastern theater of the war, Battle of Antietam, September-October 1862."

Here you can clearly see the approach to the covered Potomac River bridge on the Virginia side that had been burned by the Confederates to keep the Army of the Potomac from pursuing Robert E. Lee into VA after Antietem.

The pontoon bridge that was laid down by the Union to get across is visible to the left.
