Summary

This photo is from the 1980-81 year book and shows the members of the BHS Varsity Field Hockey Team.

At the time of this photo there were limited options for females to participate in sports. There were no girl's soccer or lacrosse teams, so field hockey and basketball were the only team sports female athletes could participate in.

Watching a field hockey match is much like watching a soccer or lacrosse game because although it's easy to understand when a goal is scored the general rules of play can be somewhat elusive for the spectator - at least for me.

Also like soccer and lacrosse, the play is constantly ongoing so participants must be in good shape and although a spectator may not understand all the rules there is always "action" on the playing field.

I always thought that trying to move a ball along a rough grassy field must be challenging and although I've heard about FH being played on a flat smooth artificial turf I never seen it. I imagine that play on such a field moves quicker than it does on a grassy field and may therefore require different skills and reflexes.

Over time, girls' soccer and lacrosse came to BHS and field hockey was a sport no longer played at the high school :=)!
