Summary

his photo is from the 1987 BHS Yearbook and shows four students engaging in an activity that became quite popular once Brunswick got its first fast food joint, in this case Hardee's (now it's Roy Rogers) in the 1980s. If one was a Senior or Junior with a car, or knew someone who had a car it was not very difficult during lunch to sneak off campus and get back by the end of the lunch period. Some did it because they did not like the meals served in the cafeteria, others because it was breaking school policy, and for some it was probably a combination of both. At times the administration tried to curb these unauthorized excursions off campus during the school day. I remember some administrators would wait in the parking lot of the fast-food establishment observing students and then checking the students' names back at school to see if they had legally checked out. However this effort was rather labor intensive so it was not actually done very often. But doing it just a few times caused rumors to spread in school and the idea was that hopefully this might deter some students from trying to sneak off campus ;=)! I remember there were a few teachers down in the Vo-Tech wing who actually allowed students to leave class to make a run to pickup food provided they brought back an order for the teacher. As a school representative of the teachers' union I counseled them that this was putting their jobs on the line, not to mention the potential liability lawsuits against them if a student was injured while doing this under their watch. Some listened, some did not. In the photo (L to R) - Mary Slagle, Jenifer Walker, Jara Bartee, Leslie Bartlett
