Obituary

Mrs. Irene T. Payne,98, of Hagerstown and formerly of Brunswick, MD, passed away on February 27, 2021. She was the wife of the late Harry Payne, owner of Payne’s Pharmacy in Brunswick, MD, who passed in 2015.

Born October 5, 1922 in New Rochelle, NY, Irene was the daughter of the late Edward and Anita Treffeisen.

After graduating from the College of New Rochelle, Irene met and married Harry. After several years and the birth of two children they settled in Knoxville, MD, where she remained in the same house for 59 years. Irene enjoyed traveling with her family to Canada, England and much of the US. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed all aspects of house keeping. She was an accomplished stitcher and won several quilting awards. She liked knitting, making hooked rug art, painting, refinishing furniture and many other crafts. She belonged to the Brunswick Garden Club and a Frederick County quilt club. She was an avid reader until her eyesight prohibited that enjoyment.

Irene spent the last four years of her life in the care of Brookdale Senior Living in Hagerstown, MD.

She is survived by a son, Dr. Harry E. Payne and wife Ruth; a daughter, Judith Powers and husband John; grandchildren Thomas Payne and wife Jessica, Steven Payne and wife Jessie, Russell Fry and wife Laura, Daniel Fry and wife Denise Hall; step-grandchildren Wendy Powers Oshiki and husband Tim, Caren Powers Sterns and husband Franklin; great-grandchildren Brandon Fry, Trentin Fry, Colleen Oshiki, Patrick Oshiki, Sean Oshiki, Caitrin Hall-Turpin, and great-great grandchildren Persephone Hall, Henryk Payne and Mabel Payne.

There will be no visitation or services at the funeral home. A celebration of Irene's life will be announced at a later date.
