Summary

This photo is from the 1997-98 BHS Yearbook and shows the members of the Whistle, the school newspaper. When I first started at Brunswick the Whistle was printed on newsprint so it looked and felt like a regular newspaper.

Putting together a school newspaper was no easy task and the students who participated in its production were providing a service to their fellow students.

As stated in the 1998 Yearbook, the school paper "… grew more active as a voice of student expression. The school paper included more articles and editorials as a result of a larger staff. In its own way, the Whistle became a little bit louder this year."

Much of this happened after Frank Booth became the advisor for it and wanted to make the Whistle a school paper covered sports, school news, activities such as homecoming and prom, and announcements about upcoming event.

It also was a forum for student 's free and open discussion of various issues.

Frank believed that Freedom of the Press was important for BHS and the nation. He was concerned that the paper wold be censored. To him censorship is a four letter word. I told him the Whistle would not be censored.

He just smiled and said "I guess that remains to be seen."

As far as I know, under Frank's guidance the Whistle was never censored by the school's administration ;=)
