Summary

Myer Kaplon (1894-1978) poses for a photo in his family-run business, Kaplon's Department Store, located at 102 W. Potomac Street, in 1957. With a degree from the Wharton School of Business, Mr. Kaplon skillfully managed the store for years, but possessed many talents.

He wrote a regular column for the Blade-Times newspaper under the pseudonym “EMKAY.” Additionally, he helped local families with their income taxes and served informally as the town photographer, roles for which he refused to accept any payment.

Mr. Kaplon had a special love for children, often photographing them in the store. He would walk around town handing out candy and, during Jewish holidays, unleavened bread to kids of all backgrounds.

Brenton Barger Just absolutely a wonderful man. In addition to being a Masonic Brother.

Doris Kelley Barker I loved this man and we loved his lovely wife who usually was there helping Fanny and Amos on Saturday nights. i never knew his family but loved their modern house on Rosemont. When Kevin was 6 weeks old I had dressed him in a yellow boy’s hat and sweater made beautifully by Grace Connor and when we went into Kaplon’s, you are right because Myer was there with his very good camera and took a picture. I have it in Kevin’s Baby book. The Kaplon’s were just splendid people and I am glad their parents picked our railroad town to live on S. Maryland Avenue and built that beautiful stores with windows like Macy’s in NYC. I loved that Miss Fanny had all the slips, bras, panties in drawers with glass front and they were beautifull displayed.

Anna Marie Miller Brookins I have not forgot the lovely Mrs Fanny Kaplon, she helped me select a wardrobe for my first year as a nursing student at Sinai in Baltimore ~ remembering her beautiful smile!

Doris Kelley Barker Fanny was never married and Amos too was never married. She had pretty dark hair and I can see her in my mind running around that store. i never realized that Myer was the head one at that store — always though he just visited. I am 95 and remember that she called my mother after she had been to NEW YORK CITY to the garment district that she had clothes that my mother would wear and clothes for me when I was a teenager & they were stylish and well made. She could have worked at any of the big stores, but she chose to stay in Brunswick, quite a marvelous lady.

Talmadge Payton High school jackets! And more!

Donna Russell Gots lots of things from there as a kid / poodle skirt, black and white saddle shoes, shorts.
