Summary
Having received his MA degree from Columbia University, Jack B. Kussmaul was principal of Brunswick High School from 1958–1964 before leaving in the middle of the 1964-65 school year to pursue his Ph. D. During his years as BHS principal, he fostered the following innovations; art as a course, a schedule rotation, dual lunch periods, and French III and IV.
Dr. Kussmaul was a member of the first library board in Brunswick, was active in the Lions and Rotary Clubs, and later served as President of Frederick Community College from 1979-1986. The Jack B. Kussmaul Theater at FCC is named after him.
Frank Mcknight I found him to be an outstanding principal and human being. In between Brunswick High and Frederick Community College he served as superintendent of the Long Island school district. I served with him as a director of Good Will. He had some interesting stories to tell. As superintendent in New York his district had a lot of rich people and famous people who donated large amounts of money to the school system. In return they wanted extended leave for their children from school. He thought that was unethical and came back home. He was an amazing man!
Jim Phillips He may have been principal in 8th grade at the old high school . One day it was snowing and he came by and said he hopes the snow keeps up. We all liked to hear that. Then he said “and then it won’t come down.” Corny but a little funny. Like a dad joke.
Terry Dunham He owned our farm on Catholic Church road before us. Had a phone in every room of the house from what I remember.
