Summary

The old Jefferson Elementary School sat boarded up for several years after it closed in the late 1960s following the opening of the Valley Elementary School, which also led to the closure of the Burkittsville school. The old schoolhouse was razed in 1980 to make way for a branch of the Bank of Brunswick, which opened in 1982. It it is now the site of Dunkin' Donuts on the corner of Lander Road and the Jefferson Pike.

Shirley Moser Barker There's the Christmas tree.

Pam Green Went there grades 1 thru 6: Grades 1 and 2 Miss Jean Stine; Grade 3 Mrs. Zirkel; Grade 4 Mrs Arnold; Grades 5 and 6 Mr Humphrey. It should have never been torn down and used for something like Burkittsville did. History gone.

There were 3 rooms and cafeteria plus basement where bathrooms were and where gym and meeting were held. Each 2 grade were in a room. We each had books for our particular grade.

It was the best of times--20-30 children per the 2 grades and essentially most of us grew up together and/or cousins going to school together.

Eva Sewell I went to this school in 4th and 5th grades. I have many happy memories of that time. Because there were just three class rooms, grades 1 and 2 were together, 3 and 4 were together and 5 and 6 were together. It all worked out beautifully. I got to go to Camp Greentop in the 5th grade and then I moved to Brunswick and got to go again in the 6th. I was one of the luckiest students in Frederick County!
