Brunswick Event: Brunswick Main Street Potomac Street Mile 2018

POTOMAC STREET MILE RESULTS 2018

The 14th Annual Potomac Street Mile took place on Saturday August 25th in downtown Brunswick and many runners turned in nice times and had a lot of fun. The event was the first public event put on by the Brunswick Main Street organization with the goal of drawing public attention to the program and giving downtown a favorable image. It also provided a healthy way for people of all ages to get out and exercise in a positive way.

Since its start 14 years ago, over 1,000 runners have take part with some as young as 5 years old and some well into their 80s.

The 2018 version had the support of many local businesses and organizations who recognize the importance of getting their name out in front of the public while offering a donation of funds or service to the event. The newest business to jump in was Towpath Creamery. They provided a nice ice cream treat to all who took part at a very low cost to the event organizers. Williams Funeral Home once again gave a generous donation. Anytime Fitness Brunswick got back into the support as they not only gave financial support, but came to the awards ceremony with several fun door prizes. Many thanks to others including, Smoketown Brewing Station, Roots and River Yoga, Kings Pizza, Five Dances Wellness Center, Nininger’s Tire and Auto Center, The Express Run Club of Brunswick, BARC and the new Brunswick Sports and Apparel for the great fun t-shirts.

Runners ran in several age group heats and competed for a number of plaques and medals along with running to improve personal best times in the mile event. When all had crossed the finish line, a freshman runner at Brunswick High, Caleb Shullenbarger, captured the overall top male plaque with an outstanding time of 5:14.2. A call had to be made at the line to determine the top spot as his teammate on the local high school cross country team, sophomore Noah McGillivray, was the runner up in 5:14.4. The top female time of the day was accomplished by sophomore stand out runner Rebekah Shullenbarger in a great time of 6:09, with her school teammate Amy Tarcza in 2nd in 6:16.

Age group winners were, males, Simon McGillivray, Morgan Corwine, Jarom Moody, John Aldridge, Mike Geisler, John Way. Female winners included, Cassidy Lamer, Laraine McInyre, Ameenah Noor, Melanie Bambrick, Zainab Abdullah, Elisa Ahmanson.

Age group runner up runners were, males, Seth Crawford, Andrew McGillivray, Nick Caruso, Tim Bambrick. Female runner up runners included, Eden McGillivray, Lilly Berg, Lindsay Aldridge, and Emily Clarkson.

In addition to the great race times and awards, many fun random prizes were given out, all were treated to fruit and snacks and drinks and all got a nice ice cream from Towpath Creamery.

Brunswick Main Street would like to thank the City of Brunswick and the Brunswick City Police for allowing the event to take place and providing a safe route for all. Thanks to the many businesses who gave financial support. Many volunteers gave up their Saturday morning to help all have a fun day. It was a chance for people to share current life stories with each other on a perfect weather day, as the sun was bright and the humidity low for the date. The next Main Street event will take place on Saturday September 8th with the 2nd Annual Un Plug event in Brunswick. For more information, go to Brunswickmainstreet.org and learn about what this organization is doing to help support the downtown area and Brunswick in general. The new Main Street Director, Sophie Smith was on hand to fire the starter gun, present awards and congratulate the runners and invite all to enjoy our downtown.
