Summary

Another "city view" of the bridge and part of what downtown looked like in the early stages of Potomac River Bridge construction. This was the early 1950s.

The leveled lot you see was home to the Swank Building next to the old People's Bank. George Swank operated a hardware business here for years that was later sold to Irv Kolker and Nat Winters of People's Home & Auto in the mid-'40s. Harrington's shoe repair shop operated next door before moving up the street.

Catty-cornered at the top of S. Virginia Avenue was Wenner's City Meat Market where the Ambulance Company is headquartered today.

Brenda Biller-Wiggins I remember watching the bridge workers from my grandparent's house 16 S Virginia Ave.

Jacquelyn Ebersole In 1965 our little informal garden club asked for and got permission to plant a tree and a few other things in the flat spot beside the steps going up to the bridge from Potomac Street. We bought what we thought would be a good kind of tree and when we dug our hole we got stopped at about 18 inches with a floor covered in linoleum.
