Summary
When the B&O consolidated switching operations in Cumberland in 1961 resulting in fewer railroad jobs in town, Brunswick was forced to reinvent itself as a bedroom community for commuters travelling to government jobs in Montgomery County, such as the NIH and the National Bureau of Standards.
As the first principal of the new Brunswick High School, Mr. Hess was instrumental in preparing students to adapt to Brunswick's transition.
