Summary

This photo is from 1985 and shows the students and advisor of the Work-Study program.

This program allowed BHS students to combine academic work with actual job experience during the school day. It was a great program for students who were interested in going into the work force upon graduation from high school.

Participation in the programs allowed these students to be response to the proverbial question asked during a job interview "What work experience do you have?" Besides, it was a great way for upperclassmen to spend less time in class during the typical school day.

At the time of this photo, Ken "Butch" Gaither was the advisor to the Work-Study program and was a very colorful guy. He loved to go over and play the horses at Charlestown, and was always playing practical jokes on people at school. I remember once when Butch was standing in the front office at school when our paychecks were being handed out by one of the secretaries, and he played a joke on one of the new teachers.

Butch took his paycheck and said to the secretary "Which charity gets my check this month Beverly?" She played along and responded "The Red Cross I think" to which Butch throws his check on her desk and asks her to forward it to them.

Standing next to him was a new teacher with her eyes wide open in amazement at what he had done. Butch turns to her and proclaims "The only reason I teach is so I can give back to the community."

For the next few days this teacher would remark to others what a generous man Butch was and we who knew him would laugh inside knowing she had been pranked by the master.

In the photo are: 1st Row (L to R) - Julie Baumgardner, Bonnie Cook, Robin Brunner, April Ritch, Mr. "Butch" Gaither (Advisor) 2nd Row - Jill Sigafoos, Noel Williams, Donnie Minnick 3rd Row - Darrin Nelson, Keith Huffer, Joey Smith
